Unified's CEO Receives "Good Turn"

Award From San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts

(LOS ANGELES) -- Alfred A. Plamann, president and chief executive officer, Unified Western Grocers, Inc., the largest retailer-owned grocery wholesaler in the western United States, was presented with the Jimmy Stewart "Good Turn" Award by the San Gabriel Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America at Annandale Golf Club, Pasadena, Calif.  The award was presented to Plamann at a special dinner on September 20, 2005.

Named after one of America's leading citizens and most acclaimed actors, the Jimmy Stewart "Good Turn" Award is presented annually to a prominent citizen in the business community who exhibits the principles upon which Scouting is based in his or her personal life.  "Good Turn" refers to the single act of an unknown Scout in England who directed Chicago publisher William D. Boyce to an address in London on a foggy night in 1909, then refused a tip because he was a Scout and could not accept payment for a "good turn."  It was that single "good turn" that led Boyce to found the Scouting program in the United States.

A former Chairman of the San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts and long-time supporter of area scouting activities, Plamann, a resident of La CaÃÆ'Æ'±ada, was singled out for his work on behalf of the Boy Scouts and his active involvement in a number of other civic and community-based organizations.  Plamann also is an active participant in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Town Hall of Los Angeles, the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University and the Weingart Center, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to the homeless in Los Angeles.

About the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts - Last year, over 37,000 youth and adults were served in one or more programs offered by the San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts.  The Council offers a wide variety of programs including three Council Camps, community programs, sporting events, outdoor programs in area mountains and wild areas and opportunities for Scouts of all ages, backgrounds and interests.
